Shelves are filled with no shortage of products infused with Cannabidiol (CBD). But with the rise of new products come new questions about which products are justifiably popular methods of consuming CBD, and which are just flash-in-the-pan fads. The most popular ways to take CBD have earned their reputation for a reason: CBD enthusiasts choose these classic formulations time and time again. But before reaching for a product, it’s important to know what CBD is, why you might hear the term “CBD oil” alongside CBD products, and which popular CBD product types are available to you.
Start with the basics: what is CBD?
CBD stands for Cannabidiol, which is one of many phytocannabinoids, or plant-derived cannabinoids, which can be found in hemp and in cannabis. (Hemp is simply cannabis with THC levels that do not exceed 0.3%.) Your body produces cannabinoids on its own, called endocannabinoids. Phytocannabinoids derived from hemp can boost your body’s natural supply.*
Unlike Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is generally thought to be responsible for the “high” associated with cannabis, CBD is believed to be non-psychoactive. In fact, CBD products like ours at Prima use a hemp extract that goes through an extra refining process that removes the traces of THC that occur naturally in hemp, without removing the other beneficial cannabinoids or terpenes. The result is called broad spectrum hemp extract, and it can be found in all our products from skincare to capsules.
What is CBD oil?
CBD oil is a term often used to describe an extract from hemp plants that contains naturally-occurring levels of the cannabinoid Cannabidiol (though it can also refer to CBD isolate or hemp extract that has been blended with other oils as well). To get CBD oil, hemp is sent through an extraction process that draws out CBD, along with other minor cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, and other materials found in hemp, to create what’s called a full-spectrum hemp extract. This extract is then refined to remove unwanted materials, and in our case, remove traces of THC to create broad-spectrum hemp extract. At Prima, our broad-spectrum hemp extract is created using an alcohol-free supercritical CO2 extraction process, without using any toxins, heavy metals, or hydrocarbons. The resulting broad-spectrum hemp extract is infused into all our products, including our facial oil, muscle rub, and hydrating skin cream.
You may see CBD tinctures described as CBD oil. This is because CBD tinctures take on the appearance of oil; tinctures are CBD oil extract as described here mixed into a carrier oil. This is different from the extract used to make our products at Prima.
What are some common ways to take CBD?
CBD’s versatility has inspired many impressive products infused with this cannabinoid. In such an innovative and growing industry, there’s always something new and exciting to try. Below are some of the most popular categories in the world of CBD products.
Topical products are applied directly to your skin, just like any other lotion, cream, or serum. This category includes a wide range of product types, all formulated to support different needs and areas of the body. Common topicals with CBD include moisturizers to boost skin hydration, facial oils for radiant skin, recovery balms, and bath bombs for an all-over body benefit. The biggest advantage of CBD topical products is that they enable localized application, so you can target specific parts of the body where you want to enhance moisture or improve skin appearance.
Here's a closer look at some of the popular CBD topicals you might come across:
- Facial moisturizers: Moisturizers are immensely popular CBD products because they combine hydrating ingredients with CBD, which can help improve the appearance of hydrated skin*. The epidermis is the body's largest organ, so keeping it happy is of the utmost importance. Products like The Afterglow have been proven effective to improve skin hydration by 35% and visibly enhance the appearance of skin firmness by 13%.
- Facial oil: A CBD-infused facial oil creates a more radiant appearance by giving your face the nourishment it needs. Our award-winning Night Magic balances CBD with phytosterols, oils, extracts, and vitamins that have been clinically proven to improve skin appearance. In a clinical study of 30 women over 8 weeks, 90 percent reported that their skin felt and appeared calmer and healthier-looking after using Night Magic.
- Body butter: Your thirsty skin will thank you. CBD-infused body butters like Skin Therapy are formulated with other moisturizing ingredients to rehydrate your skin, whether dry weather has taken its toll or your skin feels imbalanced year-round. Alongside CBD, you can find moisturizing hemp seed oil, a blend of phytosterols to support skin integrity, and natural humectants which draw moisture into the skin.
One ever-evolving corner of the CBD ingestible market is supplement powders that can be added to beverages - similar to collagen or whey. Premade beverages like coffee, tea, and seltzers are popular options, but products like our supplement powder can transform any drink into an CBD-infused elixir. These single-serving sticks make bringing CBD along with you as easy as mixing the powder into your water bottle. Paired with complementary adaptogens and botanicals, our mixes are made with a proprietary process which maximizes bioavailability. Whether you want to try CBD to settle down after a long day* or to maintain your mental focus*, there's an infusion for you.
These capsules are a familiar way for those new to the world of CBD to implement it into their wellness routine. Softgels like our The Daily vegan capsule combines 15mg of CBD in each capsule with other extracts and oils that help restore balance and support everyday stress resilience, mood, recovery, immunity, and sleep*.
